City Circle Saturday School students hard at work

The City Circle Saturday School, established in 1999, seeks to provide a supplementary education to students aged between 8-18 years.

The main aims of the Saturday School are:

  • To provide targeted assistance for students at the primary and secondary level
  • To consolidate students' knowledge in national Mathematics and English
  • To provide appropriate facilities and equipment to enhance students' learning within a culturally sensitive environment
  • To motivate students to strive for excellence in all fields
  • To encourage students to nurture their natural talents in their chosen field
  • To enhance the confidence of students who may previously have struggled academically
  • To provide positive role models for students
  • To contribute to the development of balanced adults who will be able to make a positive impact within the community
  • To facilitate the social development of students through a mentoring relationship

The Students

  • 8-18 year olds
  • Range of abilities
  • Culturally diverse
  • 75% of students come from low-income families

Success and Growth

The success of the school can be seen by the growth in student numbers. The school currently has around 100 students from a diverse range of ethnic backgrounds.  Each year demand exceeds the capacity of the school.  This successful model has led to similar schools being created in other areas in London.

For the students, participating has:

  • Allowed families on low income to get involved in enjoyable activities that are usually beyond their budget
  • Inspired confidence
  • Allowed students access to role models from the business world and diverse career paths
  • Enabled students and their parents to work with the business community
  • Helped them contribute towards their social, spiritual and moral development
  • Helped them explore positive ways to contribute to their communities

The Teachers

  • Individuals from a range of professions including media/marketing executives, bankers, consultants, scientists etc, as well as professional teachers
  • Although most of our teachers have no previous experience, many have been inspired by this experience and have gone on to become professional teachers
  • Various cultural backgrounds aiming to reflect the diversity of students
  • Provide career guidance and positive role models for students
  • Teachers from all ethnic and religious backgrounds are welcome
  • All our teachers are CRB checked

The Teaching

Students attend lessons in:

  • English
  • Maths
  • Islamic Studies (Muslim students only)

Summer School

At the end of the year we arrange numerous activities that show recognition for the hard work performed over the year. Many of these activities are performed at the school such as henna design, T-shirt painting, treasure hunts, martial arts demonstrations as well as frequent trips throughout the summer ranging from safari park to museum visits.

Summer school is a good opportunity for students at the Saturday supplementary school to take part in cultural and community-building activities.

Working with Other Organisations

The school has set up links with various organisations to enhance the community focus to their existing structure e.g. North Kensington Video & Drama Project, Islamic Relief, Visual Islamic & Traditional Arts, Indonesian Children's Relief, Just Peace and the Supplementary Schools Consortium.

Guest Speakers

External speakers are often invited to discuss various topics to a part/whole school assembly. Previous speakers include Dawud Wharnsby Ali and HRH Prince Charles.

Timings and Venue

The schools functions every Saturday during term time.  Classes run between 10am - 1.30pm on a weekly basis at the Muslim Cultural Heritage Centre, 244 Acklam Road, London, W10 5YG Nearest tube station - Westbourne Park (Hammersmith & City Line)

Why should I upgrade to Internet Explorer 7? Microsoft has redesigned Internet Explorer from the ground up, with better security, new capabilities, and a whole new interface. Many changes resulted from the feedback of millions of users who tested prerelease versions of the new browser. The most compelling reason to upgrade is the improved security. The Internet of today is not the Internet of five years ago. There are dangers that simply didn't exist back in 2001, when Internet Explorer 6 was released to the world. Internet Explorer 7 makes surfing the web fundamentally safer by offering greater protection against viruses, spyware, and other online risks.
