Event Details
The City Circle is pleased to welcome the Emeritus Bishop of Jerusalem, The Rt. Rev. Riah Abu El-Assal, on Friday 27 March 2009.
The Bishop will be discussing the current political situation unfolding since the Israeli elections, the prospects of unity amongst Palestinian groups, the diminishing presence of Arab Christians in the Holy land, and his vision for the future: Intergratsia: a new way forward promoting integrated education, offering an alternative future based on hope and life. The Bishop will be joined by Clive Hambidge, a director at Facilitate Global, who is emissary to Bishop Riah. There will be ample time to ask questions. Refreshments will be provided after the talk.
The Rt. Rev. Riah Abu El-Assal has worked in the Episcopal Church of Jerusalem and the Middle East for over 40 years, witnessing first-hand political events from the annexation of East Jerusalem during the Six-Day War in 1967, to the controversial implementation of the Road Map to peace, the death of Yasser Arafat, the wall of separation in the West Bank, and the result of sanctions against Hamas in Palestine.
Bishop Riah's work includes acting as a spokesperson to the international community on the injustices and growing dangers of war in the Middle East, and on the need to build bridges through dialogue and understanding. He also gives humanitarian aid to the victims of war, and has promoted education by establishing educational institutions across the Diocese of Jerusalem, including kindergartens and subsidies to children without means. He is currently establishing a large educational project integrating students of the three faiths in a single school. Bishop Riah is the Founding Patron of the Holy Land Medical Project combining Israeli and Palestinian Doctors, Medical Professionals and Community Leaders in collaborative health care initiatives.
The Diocese of Jerusalem includes Palestine, Jordan, Israel, Lebanon and Syria, with Jerusalem as its centre. The Rt. Rev. Riah Abu El-Assal, was the thirteenth Anglican Bishop in Jerusalem, and the third Palestinian Bishop.
