Event details

Man-made and natural disasters such the tsunami of 2004 in the Aceh region, earthquakes, floods, and volcanic eruptions have been happening in Indonesia frequently and were hugely covered as international news stories.  These sad events have left many homeless, destitute an in need to care.  Chariot For Children works to restore hope for the needy especially women and children. Currently, the charity is working to set up a mobile clinic and a dormitory for children.  It continues to promote education by funding the schooling of children in the affected communities.

In this talk, we will learn about the damage left over when a community is truck by such a level of adversity.  The inspiring story of Chariots for Children will show how a group of determined people can make a huge difference to the lives of those who are less fortunate.

The speaker:

Sister Nizma Agustjik Scoffield, originally Indonesian, is the founder and chairperson of Chariots For Children.

Following the violent conflict,t which took place on Ambon Island between 1999 and 2001 as well the long conflict in Aceh, Nizma visited the regions to report on the situation of children who found themselves victims to a fight they were not part of.  After several visits, it became apparent that there was, and would remain, tremendous need to help these children, which drove Nizma to commit to addressing the issue in 2002.

Using a report and photographs documenting the situation in affected areas, Nizma mobilsed a group of supporters through personal contacts and existing organisations, such as the City Circle.  She has since grown Chariots For Children into a registered charity working on a portfolio of projects.

Nizma Is an a great example of a motivated and determined individual working tirelessly to serve the poor.
