Date: 22 Jul 2011 at 18:45 to 20:30
Venue: Abrar House, 45 Crawford Place, W1H 4LP

Event details
Zakaat is the third pillar of Islam and all four schools of jurisprudence agree that it should be paid locally; based on the famous hadith of Muad Ibn Jabal, in which the messenger of Allah sent him to Yemen and amongst his instructions was to collect the Zakat from its people and return it to them.  So why then in 21st century Britain, with all the knowledge, scholars, Islamic charities and infrastructure, do we still find ourselves not paying it within the shores of this land?

In this talk, the speaker explores why we need to revive the prophetic tradition of giving our Zakat locally, as charity does begin at home.  The speaker will discuss the need for British Muslims to take a step back and re-assess the obligations  relating to the distribution of Zakat in order to benefit those around us who are in most need of our help.

The speaker:
Azim Kidwai is the head of Mercy Mission UK (www.mercymissionworld.org) and the chair of the National Zakat Foundation; a fund established to collect and distribute Zakat in the UK.  A former civil servant with a specialization in communications for a number of government departments, Azim now heads up the UK operations of Mercy Mission World, a global community empowerment movement working across five continents.
