Samar Minallah is a Pakistani human rights activist, documentary film maker and writer. For more than a decade, Samar has been working for civil rights and highlighting various issues related to disadvantaged groups, particularly women, in Pakistan.
Join us for this weeks City Circle where she will be discussing her work advocating against various forms of culturally sanctioned violence.
Samar is the founder of Ethnomedia, a documentary production company. Ethnomedia is focused on documenting the positive aspects of the lives of Pukhtun women, but her documentaries have also dealt with broader social and human rights issues. Her most recent documentary highlighted the plight of internally displaced Pakhtun tribes people forced out because of the ongoing fighting in the region. Her documentaries are being used for advocacy and awareness-raising by various government and non-governmental organisations.
Samar was recipient of the Perdita Huston 2007 Award for her campaign against swaara and vaani tribal customs in parts of the North-West Frontier Province and Punjab. She was also a recipient of the Unicef Child Rights Award 2005.
