Event details
In the U.K, a report of domestic violence is made to the police every minute. It is the single most quoted reason for homelessness. Young women are now considered as the group most vulnerable to domestic violence. An increasing number of men are reporting experiences of violence at the hands of their partners.

Join The Sunshine Project* for an enlightening workshop as we explore the issue of domestic violence, particularly as relevant to Muslim communities, from a fresh perspective.

Through audience participation, role play, and interactive video presentations, the workshop will touch upon the following key questions:
1. What is domestic violence & what are the unique ways in which it manifests in a Muslim family context?
2. If s/he really is being abused, why doesn’t s/he just get up and leave?
3. What is the Islamic perspective on domestic violence? Is forgiving an abusive partner an Islamic solution?
4. Why are increasing numbers of men reporting abuse? What types of abuse are they reporting?

The speakers:
Mazna Hussain is founder of The Sunshine Project and has several years of experience working in the field of domestic violence both in the U.K and the U.S. She has legally represented Muslim survivors of domestic violence, honour-based violence, female genital mutilation, forced marriage, human trafficking, rape, and torture. She has also led community education projects designed to educate and empower Muslim communities against domestic violence.

Monna Shahna is director of social services at The Sunshine Project. She is a U.K registered social worker with over ten years of experience working in the field of mental health. She has provided counselling and mental health services to a wide range of individuals, including survivors of domestic violence, adults with severe and persistent mental illness, individuals with learning disabilities, and inner city youth.

*The Sunshine Project: Empowering Muslims Against Domestic Violence is a dynamic charity initiative focused on ending domestic violence in Muslim families in greater London. Whilst recognising that domestic violence is a form of oppression affecting people of all faiths, we work specifically to empower Muslim individuals and communities to eradicate this harmful practice. We provide free confidential emotional support and counselling to victims of domestic violence and engage in creative outreach to spread awareness on the issue in Muslim communities.
