Title: New Possibilities in Finance and Banking Speakers: Iqbal Asaria and Shahid Jamil Date: 9th July 2010 at 18:45 Venue: Abrar House, 45 Crawford Place, W1H 4LP The City Circle is pleased to present a panel discussion with Iqbal Asaria and Shahid Jamil Iqbal Asaria will consider the opportunities that the recent financial crisis offers Muslims in terms of making a positive ethical contribution to economic management, banking and finance in Europe. Shahid Jamil will outline a model of zero real interest banking as an alternative approach.
He will compare the differences between real interest and zero real interest banking; their advantages and disadvantages and how products could be developed to promote and implement Zero Real Interest Banking in the main stream globally. M Iqbal Asaria - Associate, Afkar Consulting Ltd Mr Iqbal is a trained Economist and Accountant. He has worked as an Investment Analyst in the City of London for several years. For the last several years he has been involved in consultancy on financial product structuring and niche marketing services to faith and ethnic communities in the UK. As part of these services Mr Iqbal has advised many banks and insurance companies in the UK on their launch of Islamic financial services. He is also consultant to a number of institutions on structuring and marketing Islamic financial products in the UK. For four years he was the Chair of the Business and Economics Committee of the Muslim Council of Britain. He is now a Special Adviser on Business and Economic Affairs to the Secretary General of the Muslim Council of Britain. In this capacity, he was a member of the Governor of the Bank of England's working party set up to facilitate the introduction of Shariah compliant financial products in the UK market. Iqbal teaches various BA, BSc, MSc and MA level courses in Islamic Finance, Banking and Insurance. He was awarded the CBE in the 2005 Queen's Honours List for services to international development. Shahid Jamil BA (Hons), FCA, qualified as a member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England & Wales in 1967. He began a career in international banking in 1969, which spanned a period of 25 years. During this period he worked in commercial and merchant banking and as head of bank treasury operations in a number of countries, including Pakistan, Luxembourg, United Kingdom, Egypt and the United Arab Emirates. |
