Palestinians in Israel: Segregation, Discrimination and Democracy

alt

Speaker: Ben White
Date: 3 Feb 2012
Time: 18:45 - 20:30
Venue: Abrar House, 45 Crawford Place, W1H 4LP

Event details
In 2003, Netanyahu opined that Israel faces a "demographic threat" if the portion of its Arab citizens rises above the current 20%.  Much of the attention given to the Palestinian-Israeli conflict ignores the issues faced by this community.

In this talk, the speaker will shed a light on the conditions of Palestinian citizens of Israel.  He will discuss why Israel's definition as a Jewish state, which privileges one ethno-religious group, cannot be seen as compatible with democratic values and that this will undermine any attempts to find a lasting peace.

The speaker:
Ben White is a freelance journalist and writer specialising in Palestine/Israel. He is the author of Israeli Apartheid (Pluto, 2009). His work has appeared in the Guardian online, the New Statesman, and Electronic Intifada. He also writes on the broader Middle East, Islam and Christianity, and the 'war on terror'.
