The City Circle in association with the International Institute of Islamic thought (IIIT) UK is pleased to present Translating the Quran into English: A Brief History and Important Issues: the second in a series of spiritual talks leading up to Ramadan. 

Professor Abdel Haleem will discuss his recent translation of The Quran into English (2004, Oxford University Press). He will present a review of other influential translations of the Quran into English and reflect on the process he went through, the difficulties he encountered, what has been achieved and what remains to be done. 

Bio: Muhammad Abdel Haleem learned the Qur'an by heart as a child in an 
Egyptian village, then studied at Al-Azhar schools. He got his BA from Cairo University, and PhD from Cambridge University where he also taught Arabic. Then he went to teach at the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London and in 1995 became Professor of Islamic Studies. He is the Founding Director of the Centre of Islamic Studies at SOAS, Chief editor of the 'Journal of Qur'anic Studies'. Oxford University Press published his book 'The Qur'an: a New Translation' in 2004. He Has thirteen grandchildren
