Winter Revolutions: How the Arab Youth Ousted Two Dictators

The Egyptian Revolution

Title: Winter Revolutions: How the Arab Youth Ousted Two Dictators
Speaker: Chris Doyle, Director The Council for Arab-British Understanding

Date: 18 February 2011 at 18:45
Venue: Abrar House, 45 Crawford Place, W1H 4LP

Event details:
Most recently, we have been witnesses to the historic rise of two Arab nations against their despotic rulers.  Following the self-immolation of a young Tunisian, the people revolted against the oppressive regime resulting in the evasion of Zine El Abidine Ben Ali on the 14 January 2011.   This success encouraged the rise of the Egyptian Revolution on the 25 January 2011.  By the end of last week, the popular uprising, with the help of the national army, had managed to topple Hosni Mubarak after 30 years in the presidential palace.

These recent events and ongoing unrest in the Arab world brought to the attention of the world the people's cry for freedom, justice, economic reform and the end of corruption.  Some commentators suggest that the Middle East will never be the same again.
In this talk, the speaker will discuss the state of affairs that led to the rise of the youth and the reasons for the success of these revolutions despite the failure of many previous attempts to oust the oppressive regimes.  The talk will unpick the implications of the recent changes on the dynamics of each country and the region.

This talk is a modest homage to the martyrs who lost their lives whilst defending their people against dictatorship.

The talk will be followed by Q&A and time to mingle over tea and biscuits.
